Beaplaywright.com consists of 5 modules:

Making a Start

This module explores the preparatory work that needs to be done before writing your play: what kind of routines will be helpful to you, what kind of writer you are and where would be an interesting place to set your play.

Structure

This module summarises some elements of structural theory, how to best shape your material to maximise its dramatic potential and how to think about character motivation and scene structure.

Character

This module explores some ways of creating characters, how much real life can inform dramatic characters and how to deepen and complicate those creations.

Dialogue and Theatricality

This module examines the relationship between ordinary speech and dramatic dialogue, how to move beyond naturalistic conversation and other elements of theatricality that can be used to enhance your script.

Getting It Produced

The final module discusses the causes of and posits some strategies to overcome writers’ block and how to think about best placing and marketing your final script.

At the end of each module on the Interactive course, you will complete and submit a bridging exercise. We will respond to these exercises with constructive notes and feedback from the Live Theatre Literary Department. At the end of the course, you will be asked to write and submit a full length play which will be given a careful reading with a detailed critique, comments and advice on the next stage for your script.

Good luck with the course,

Gez and Jeremy
